Callum Regan Brown was killed just weeks after his 18th Birthday. On April 4th Callum was the passenger of a car driven by his friend Kyle.
Kyle was high on drink and drugs while on leave from the army. Kyle was driving recklessly and speeding, he clipped the kerb twice and smashed into a bus shelter and a tree.
Callum had a bright future ahead of him. He died at the scene of the collision just metres from his home in Todmorden.
Shortly after losing Callum his mum, Janet, organised a road safety event with Wasted Lives for all of Callum's friends to attend in the area. She wanted to take the time to remind them to look after each other. All of Callum's friends signed a community pledge* to look out for each other and be careful on the roads.
Callum's mum wrote a touching message to Callum's friends which should serve as a warning to all about looking after each other:
Go out, have a good time, live your life most of all look out for your friends and keep them safe. Don't worry about being the "safe friend." If one of your friends is going that bit too far tell them to stop! Don't ignore them or worse still condone or encourage what they are doing. If you have to ring their mum, dad, brother, sister, anyone, then do it! It's better to fall out with them than stand at their funeral.
If someone had rang me on 3rd April to say "Get Callum and Kyle home they're being stupid" then we wouldn't be here today. Callum wouldn't be in a box and Kyle wouldn't be facing trouble in the future.
I cannot put into words the agony of losing Callum. You all tell us we are strong and brave, we have no choice but to carry on.
Don't let another family have to live the rest of their lives like we are living. Don't leave here and head off to the pub to get smashed. Your life can be gone in the click of a finger.
This is my family. Our last picture of us all together, never to be repeated.
Next time you know on your friends door, do you want to see tears in their family's eyes or hear them shouting up the stairs "Mickey's here, takeaway time"
The Choice is Yours!
The film below was put together by some of Callum's friends in his memory. It is a stark reminder of the simple things you would miss if your friends weren't there. Lets look after each other and be careful.
